Californian Orange: the 1970’s cali weed heritage

Californian Orange stunned Dutch Passion founder Henk van Dalen when he first encountered her on a 1970’s Cali road trip. The hybrid indica/sativa genetics produce heavy yields from medium sized plants and deliver an old-school aroma with a delicious zesty mandarin/orange terpy taste.

This is an established classic which has stood the test of time over many decades since she was first introduced. With numerous cannabis cups and repeat growers, Californian Orange (sometimes known as Cali Orange or simply Cali-O) delivers XL harvests with a 9-week bloom time and very high THC levels.

Dutch Passion was formally established in the 1980’s using genetics collected from all around the world in the 1970’s. California was at the heart of the US cannabis world in the 70’s, the warm sun-kissed climate offered a great outdoor grow climate and many of the early US cannabis breeders such as Sam The Skunkman and his cannabis breeding friends at Sacred Seeds had made California their home.

The emerging cannabis breeding scene in the 1970’s was a small world where many people knew each other. Fortunately for Dutch Passion, their early network of contacts was extensive. Many of these early seeds are still preserved in the Dutch Passion deep-freeze archives. Californian Orange stood out for the unique sweet, penetrating citrus aroma.

The name says it all! If you like sweet, sticky buds with a high that slaps hard then look no further. The genetics contains both indica and sativa influences, giving her a compact appearance but with XL yields and a liberating anti-anxiety effect and a deeply pleasurable euphoric high. Classic old-school weed!

Californian Orange breeding story

Californian Orange was the most impressive of the early 1970’s Cali strains evaluated on that early (pre-)Dutch Passion road tour. The genetic origins of the strain prior to 1970 are uncertain. In the early days of Cali weed, good contacts were all-important and Dutch Passion have had huge respect for Cali breeders (and genetics) ever since the discovery of Californian Orange.

Seeds were brought back to Amsterdam and the genetics became one of the early high-quality foundation strains which helped establish Dutch Passion as a leading European source of high-quality cannabis genetics from around the world.

Early European growers were keen to sample genuine USA genetics with their loud flavours, heavy yields and banging highs. Many decades later, not much has changed! Californian Orange genetics have remained the same ever since, there has been no need to change a winning formula or cross her. Sometimes original is best, and the longevity & enduring popularity of this original Cali import remains as strong as ever.

Californian Orange has won several cannabis cups over the years. This original 'Orange' super-strain took her first prize in 2013. She then took first prize at the Copa Txapelketa in Spain - winning against some fine competition from the best of the Spanish growers.

In 2016, she won 2 different cups at the same event in Argentina. In South America there are many outdoor growers who get outstanding guerrilla harvests. Californian Orange took first place at the 2016 Copa Cannabis in both the Outdoor category and the Extract category.

This highlights her suitability for both outdoor and indoor cultivation, as well as her high yields for those producing cannabis extracts. Resin-dripping buds with delightful aroma come as standard. Californian Orange is a founding member of the Orange Family of cannabis seeds, a collection of premium quality weed seeds noted for their tangy citrus aromas.

The descendant cannabis strains of Californian Orange

Early cannabis lines with rock-solid over 20% THC potential quickly found their way into the plans of ambitious breeders seeking to raise the bar with new crosses. Dutch Passion original Californian Orange genetics have been used by breeders all over the world in various ‘Cali Orange’ and ‘Cali-O’ crosses. Californian Orange seeds are available only as photoperiod feminised seeds and the genetics have been used in two particularly successful new strains.

Orange Hill Special

Orange-Hill-Special-cannabis-seeds

Orange Hill Special is a cannabis cup winner made by crossing Californian Orange with Orange Bud. She is a hybrid strain with yields somewhat higher than even Californian Orange. The bloom time, at 8 weeks is also a little faster. THC levels can exceed 20% in good indoor conditions, making her an excellent choice for those demanding uncompromising potency. Available in photoperiod feminised seeds and regular cannabis seeds.

Californian Orange special growing tips

Decades before the modern clamour for fine-quality USA cannabis seeds, Dutch Passion brought the original Cali Orange genetics to the mainstream.

Despite fierce competition from many modern USA cultivars, Californian Orange still delivers comparable potency but with her own unique old-school cali dankness and a special lip-smacking taste that you won’t find anywhere else.

To get the best from her, we recommend the following:

•    Grow with LED (and supplementary UVA/UVB lights if possible) for the highest total cannabinoid content and the richest terpene content.

•    Slow-release organic nutrients (BioTabs are particularly fool-proof and popular) are the perfect approach for those that struggle with over/under feeding using mineral nutrients.

•    Keep your plants in the optical sweet spot. Most quality LED suppliers give detailed hanging height/power-setting info for plants in the seedling stage, vegetative growth phase and cannabis bloom phase.

•    Use large, aerated containers for maximum root health and vigour. Airpots and felt sacks deliver great results.

•    Allow an extra week of bloom for the heaviest effects.
