What does 1:1 mean for cannabis seeds?

Occasionally cannabis seeds come with the descriptive term “1:1”. Usually this means that, on average, the plants produce buds with a 1:1 ratio of THC:CBD. Such strains often have less pronounced psychoactive effects compared to traditional 20%+ THC strains. This makes 1:1 THC:CBD cannabis seed varieties popular with many medical users/growers as well as recreational users that love the blissfully enjoyable combo of THC & CBD. But as other new cannabinoids emerge (such as CBDV, CBG, THCV etc) a new generation of 1:1 cannabis strains have become possible. These could be a 1:1 blend of any cannabinoids.

What is the one-to-one ratio for cannabis?
A 1:1 cannabis strain has roughly equal amounts of two key cannabinoids. Traditionally this refers to a 1:1 THC:CBD strain. But a 1:1 strain could equally be 1:1 THC:THCV, or 1:1 CBD:CBDV. Such strains are available in both feminised seeds and autoflower seeds.
Be sure to check out the genetic description offered by the seed bank to get a clear idea of the genetic pedigree. 1:1 strains are often of greater interest to medical users/growers who are perhaps more interested in the value of minor cannabinoids than they are in the absolute THC level of a given strain.
Note that Dutch Passion have been particularly active in the field of new cannabinoid research in recent years and were first to offer some unusual strains rich in rare cannabinoids.
Some of the ancient 1970’s Dutch Passion original gene bank strains have been particularly interesting for this new field of cannabinoid research.

Do 1:1 THC strains get you high?
Yes they do, but not as high as strains that are very high (20%+) THC. That said, many people prefer the more manageable effects of a 1:1 strain and claim extra physical/med effects due to the CBD. The biggest fans of 1:1 CBD:THC strains claim blissful levels of physical and mental relief and wouldn’t swap their buds for traditional higher-THC buds!
1:1 THC:CBD ratio benefits
Some 1:1 THC:CBD aficionados claim that a synergistic/entourage effect between the THC & CBD creates the deepest sense of relaxation without incapacitating the user with a powerful high. Most 1:1 THC:CBD fans tend to be medical users. But large numbers of recreational users enjoy a 1:1 strain as a daytime smoke/vape - they find the effects preferable and save their high-THC buds for an evening blast.
A 1:1 THC:CBD strain typically has around/up-to 10% THC & CBD in the dry buds. Occasionally higher 1:1 percentage are possible. But even the highest 1:1 cannabis strain won’t get you higher than a 25% THC banger.
Cannabis strains with a 1:1 ratio
Never tried a 1:1 cannabis strain? Some find them far superior to traditional high-THC weed and wouldn’t swap. If you haven’t tried them yet, these are the Dutch Passion offerings. Note that many medical growers make cannabis oil/cannabis concentrates from these unusual strains and may even blend the results with other strains to make their own bespoke meds.
It’s worth adding that there will be phenotype variations heavier in one or other of the 1:1 cannabinoids. Note every pheno delivers buds with a precise 1:1 ratio, but when several plants are grown the average content across the phenotypes should show a 1:1 ratio.
CBD Skunk Haze (1:1 CBD:THC)
Available in photoperiod hybrid feminized seeds, CBD Skunk Haze has around 7-10% CBD and the same amount of THC in the dry buds. This is a stable and predictable strain, having been sold for around a decade with numerous repeat (mainly medical) growers. She grows like a traditional feminised seed variety taking around 9 weeks to complete bloom. Satisfying effects with moderate/medium psychoactive properties and a sublime feel-good vibe.
Auto CBD-Victory (1:1 CBD:CBDV)
With a 1:1 ratio of CBD:CBDV (cannabidivarin) and very low THC levels (below 0.3%) there are no psychoactive effects from Auto CBD-Victory. Instead, these autoflowering seeds produce plants with around 4-6% CBDV in the dry buds and a similar amount of CBD. This hybrid auto takes around 10-11 weeks to grow from autoflower seed to harvest with good yields. Again, this 1:1 strain, with no ‘THC high’ is most popular with medical growers.
THC-Victory / Auto THC-Victory (1:1 THCV:THC)
Anyone interested in the properties of THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) is able to produce THCV rich buds by growing either THC-Victory (feminised seeds) or Auto THC-Victory (autoflower seeds).
Both strains produce a 1:1 ratio of THC:THCV, with around 5-7% of each. The presence of low/medium THC levels will mean there is a moderate, rather than overwhelming, THC high.
What ratio of CBD to THC is best?
Much depends on the individual/patient and their personal preferences. Some don’t mind higher THC levels. Others avoid that at all costs seeking low/no-THC strains. Some growers make their own oils/tinctures by e.g. blending high THC crops with 1:1 strains. This allows tailored THC effects to suit the individual.
1:1 CBD:THC
Suits those that cope well with a moderate THC high, or those that find the effects of THC beneficial.
2:1 CBD:THC
Suits those that still benefit from THC but prefer a slightly lower level.
5:1 CBD:THC
Levels of THC become significantly reduced. Although THC is still present the effects are notably reduced and the patient benefits from a higher CBD loading.
10:1 CBD:THC
As THC approaches very low levels the effects will be far less noticeable unless the patient has a very low THC tolerance.
20:1 CBD:THC
Hardly any psychoactive effects remain. Such ratios are useful for those patients that feel some medical benefit from ‘trace’ THC levels.
50:1 CBD:THC
No psychoactive effects due to the very low THC levels. Such heavy CBD content favours those wanting minimal THC exposure, but still with some remaining THC for medical purposes.
