Kerosene Krash phenotype hunting

Kerosene Krash phenotype hunting

Kerosene Krash is a photoperiod feminised strain using elite cannabis genetics from Sherbet x GG4 (formerly known as Gorilla Glue). It’s an indica dominant strain with rock-hard buds noted for some of the consistently highest potency levels ever seen by Dutch Passion, around 20-25% THC potential.

The penetrating, pungent chemical Kush aroma smells like a fresh fuel spill - perhaps the best terpene profile yet encountered by the Dutch Passion team. Without doubt, this is one of the finest Dutch Passion strains made from killer USA genetics and is part of the USA Special cannabis seed collection along with the rest of our best USA genetics.

A team of European pro-growers and multiple-cannabis cup winners The Urban Growers Collective took 10 feminised seeds of Kerosene Krash and grew them under optimised conditions in order to select what they felt to be the best four phenotypes. This is the story of how they worked with the Dutch Flowers Magazine (‘DFM’) for independent smoke evaluations and used this, alongside their own grow experience, to identify the best four phenotypes.

The Urban Growers Collective grew their Kerosene Krash seeds under their preferred conditions using LED grow lights, well controlled humidity, BAC nutrients & slow-release organic BioTab nutrients in 25 litre containers of a 4:1 coco:light-mix grow medium.

The compact indica genetics only stretch for 2-3 weeks, with some phenotypes coming to a stand-still fairly quickly. This means the grower can afford to give slightly longer periods of veg growth. Most plants tend to reach 60-80cm tall and Kerosene Krash responds well to both the SCROG (screen of green) method as well as the SOG (sea of green) method.

When pro-growers start a phenotype-hunting project they are generally looking for truly unique characteristics that can produce mother plants of rare quality. These mother plants are then often used for further breeding, cannabis cup competitions or kept for personal/commercial use - elite, proven XL yielding, high THC cuttings with banging terpene profiles can trade for several €/$/£ Thousands each. They are in particularly high demand from legal, licensed producers looking to fill a commercial grow facility with hundreds/thousands of plants with guaranteed slamming harvests.

The best mother plants, especially those with independent lab analysis showing epic terpene content and rich total cannabinoid contents are kept for further evaluation. Of these, those that are easiest/fastest to grow with the heaviest yields tend to make the cut as possible keepers. Remember that most pro-growers have limited space in their grow/mother room, so only the ‘best of the best’ phenotypes are usually kept.

In order to gain an unbiased assessment, the Urban Growers Collective linked up with the highly experienced connoisseurs from the Dutch Flowers Magazine team (the DFM team have a website and an Instagram page that you may find interesting) for independent smoke reviews before finalising on the top-4 phenotypes which you can read about below.

Before their smoke reviews, the DFM team noted that “An overwhelming smell fills the room, when we opened the bag which contains these 4 new phenotypes of Kerosene Krash. A floral and lemon Kush aroma filled the air”.

Kerosene Krash Phenotype 1

Green, dense well-formed round buds sparkled with trichomes. The vivid orange hairs popped out thanks to the silvery-white resinous coating. A few amber trichomes hint at the awesome power that awaits the connoisseur smoker.

A slightly sweet gelato-like taste emerges behind the kerosene-rich fuel terpenes. Phenotype 1 was easy to grow, heavy yielding and delivered instant stress busting effects that will be adored by indica aficionados.

“The first phenotype was the greenest and felt a bit more Sativa-like. It promised to be uplifting at first, but nothing could be further from the truth. It was uplifting tor a few minutes, but right after it knocks you into a siesta. This dense beauty was covered with amber trichomes which explains the heavy sedative effect. The taste is fruity and reminds us a bit of Gelato, but with a strong diesel dominant aroma. Phenotype 1 is perfect for the Indica lovers out there.”

Kerosene Krash Phenotype 2

Throughout growth and after curing, Kerosene Krash phenotype 2 showed a magnificently dense trichome coating which was best seen under a magnifying glass/loupe.

Thanks to an uncomplicated growth and bloom phase, the Urban Growers Collective knew this phenotype would combine the home-growers dream combo of slamming potency with ease-of-growth. The orange hairs gave delicate splashes of colour to the fragrant buds that reeked with an appealing fuel-fruity earthy diesel dankness.

Despite the intensely potent indica genetics, phenotype #2 didn’t induce as much sleepiness as the other phenotypes and was highly praised for the enjoyable, anti-anxiety effects. This impressive pheno was sent out for lab analysis:

“Looking at the trichomes, we knew it should be a powerful smoke. There was something fruity and sweet about this phenotype. We would best describe the smell as earthy with diesel. The taste was dominated by a gassy and jet-fuel terpene palette. Something berry-like is going on while you exhale, which is hard to identify because of the earthy smell. It will get you stoned for sure, but not as sleepy as the first one.”

Lab report with 19.9% THC levels for Kerosene Krash phenotype 2

The 19.9% THC level from the lab report confirmed the Urban Growers Collective belief that this was a special pheno. Average Dutch coffee shop buds are around 15% THC, so levels around 20% represent a seriously strong harvest. This pheno also has 0.4% CBG, 0.32% CBD & 0.23% CBC. A pleasingly broad cannabinoid content, typical of finer quality strains. Terpene content was also impressive at 0.8%. The Urban Growers Collective felt they could easily exceed 20% THC on a subsequent grow with the conditions fully dialled in.

Kerosene Krash Phenotype 3

Phenotype #3 really caught everyone’s eye, both the growers from the Urban Grow Collective and the attention of the reviewers from the Dutch Flowers Magazine. The dense trichome frosting seemed to be present at an even higher level than the other phenotypes.

This reduced the ‘green’ appearance and gave a grey/silver bud veneer. The redness of the trichomes seemed less prominent than the other phenotypes due to the dominance of the white resin coating.

Again, the growers noted this phenotype was easy and undemanding in the grow room, delivering heavy yields, perhaps the most eye-watering potency levels and a refreshing lemon-diesel aroma. A few good smokes leave you feeling the same levels of rest & relaxation as a day at the spa!

There was no surprise that this exceptional phenotype found a permanent home in the elite mother-plant collection of the Urban Growers Collective and is expected to be entered for several cannabis cups in the coming year or two.

“The third phenotype was the most intense. A delicious lemon diesel aroma with such a delicious earthy taste. No matter how much you put in your joint it will get you stoned and euphoric for sure. A great effect recommended to break up the week it will save you the cost of a long day at the spa. You'll wake up feeling fully rested, but make sure you don't light this one up in the morning unless you're planning some heavy binge-watching.”

Kerosene Krash Phenotype 4

Phenotype #4 was the final special selection from the original ten Kerosene Krash plants. This one combined a unique vanilla-style scent to complement the gloriously pungent fuel aroma - a very special and unusual combo with attention-demanding levels of jar-appeal. The buds boast a green appearance beneath the regulation, thick layer of Kerosene Krash trichomes.

The effects are mind-numbingly potent and were adored by the Dutch Flower Magazine test team as well as the experienced team from the Urban Growers Collective. Like all the Kerosene Krash phenotypes, she is only really recommended to the more experienced smokers that insist on a premium-strength vape/smoke for special occasions or end-of-day use.

These buds can floor the less experienced smokers, even a small joint - a little goes a very long way. The growers also noted that phenotype #4 seemed to offer serious XXL growth potential, both for indoor as well as potential outdoor/greenhouse growers with the right climates. Although competition was fierce, the easy growth, unique taste and extremely pleasurable properties ensured that phenotype #4 also made the final selection. The grow team were so impressed that a bud sample was sent for lab analysis.

“The last one has a fruity smell, almost a vanilla scent to her dense buds. When we crushed the buds, we were greeted by a fuel aroma. When inhaled, the taste is earthy and deeply nutty & musky with a slightly sweet, fuel-like terpene bomb on the exhale. Just like the other phenotypes, this one is not for lightweights. We would love to see some giant outdoor plants from this one!”

Lab report with 18.3% THC levels for Kerosene Krash phenotype 4

Kerosene-Krash-lab-results-Number-4

Lab analysis showed THC at 18.3%, 0.6% CBG, 0.49% CBD and 0.27% CBD. Whenever THC levels approach 20% you are assured of powerful, premium strength vape/smoke. Total terpene content in the buds was 0.7%, some way above the 0.5% terpene level seen on many lab reports. The particularly enjoyable effects are partly down to the terpenes and partly to the different cannabinoids present.

Kerosene Krash feminised photoperiod cannabis strain

With consistent, repeatable 20% THC levels on all phenotypes Kerosene Krash is one of the finest and most potent strains indica dominant strains available today for home growers.

As such, she is one of the rare, hand-selected Dutch Passion cannabis seeds to make it into the High THC cannabis seed collection, home only to the very strongest strains suited to the most demanding, serious growers. Bloom time is around 8 weeks with an earthy diesel/gassy stench and a slightly fruity Kush finish.

The sticky buds shimmer with an exceptionally dense trichome covering, cannabis concentrate fans love the unusually high yields (around 20%) from these top-shelf buds.

The cured buds have an almost-uniquely over-powering level of nose-tingling rankness and pungency. A glass mason jar is the best way to try to control the all-pervading fragrance, even double-bagging these buds won’t contain down the legendary dankness. If you love epic jar-appeal, look no further!

Advice from Dutch Passion’s experts for Kerosene Krash

Most hobby growers simply can’t afford the professional lab reports - €100-€150 for each analysis detailing the cannabinoid/terpene profile. These are vital to professional/commercial growers determined to separate the very best phenotypes from the merely excellent ones.

Fortunately, the levels of consistency from elite strains like Kerosene Krash mean that there should be no weak phenotypes present. Instead, growers can select their preferred strains based on their grow experience (yield, speed & ease of growth) and smoke reviews. Those with access to independent lab analysis can afford to go the extra mile and add some scientific back-up to support their own judgment.

Remember that you are the most important judge/assessor of the buds. If several phenotypes offer similar levels of potency/satisfaction/enjoyment then you may prefer to select your preferred phenotype/mother-plant based on e.g. aroma, yield or speed of bloom.

The choice is never easy, even for the pros, especially when faced with several top-quality phenotype options. But if you conduct your own phenotype selections, be sure to save cuttings from each phenotype or be prepared to re-veg the plants which produced your favourite smoke.

Serious growers will already know that growing with quality LED lights will produce higher total cannabinoid/terpene contents compared to grows conducted with older HPS light technology. Pro-growers may also want to add supplemental UVA/UVB lights to push THC levels to the max. Those keen to deliver the most intense terpene profile may wish to use the blue-light treatment at the end of bloom. For those with wavelength-adjustable LED grow lights this means turning off the red LEDs for the last 2-3 days and growing just with blue light. This is thought to give a boost to final terpene production.
