How many buds can a cannabis plant produce?

There is no single fixed number. A cannabis plant can produce anything from a handful of large colas to hundreds of smaller buds, depending on the type of cannabis seeds, growing style, environment and grower techniques.

Experienced growers usually measure success by dry weight (grams or ounces of finished, cured flower) rather than trying to count individual buds. Bud count is interesting, but total usable yield and quality matter far more to the experienced grower

Here are some approximate figures based on common grow scenarios. Note that these will vary enormously between strains, feminised seed vs autoflower seed choice and conditions:

Context on weight: Indoor plants can often yield 100–500g (3.5oz - 1lb) of dried buds, while exceptional outdoor plants (especially heavy-yielding photoperiod outdoor cannabis seed varieties) can reach 1–4 kg (2-9lbs) under perfect conditions.

As a rough guide, 1–5 grams of well-dried cannabis flower is often equivalent to a single small-to-medium bud. Medium-to-large buds typically weigh around 5–20 grams, although size, density and genetics can cause significant variation.

Some strains produce exceptionally large, bulbous buds that can exceed 20–30 grams when dried; close to an ounce from a single bud. A 3Kg (6lb) outdoor monster could produce around 1000 buds although strains with naturally smaller flowers may produce even more.

What determines how many buds a cannabis plant produces?

These are the factors that explain why there’s no simple answer — many interconnected factors influence both the number and size of buds:

Genetics: Some cannabis seed varieties are naturally bushy with hundreds of flowering sites; others focus energy on fewer, larger colas.

Autoflower seeds vs photoperiod feminised seeds: Autos are faster and more compact. Autos often, but not always, have a slightly lower total bud count. Though this depends tremendously on the grower, conditions and autoflower genetics etc. Photoperiod feminised seed varieties have the potential to grow into huge proportions with extended vegetative time, leading to far more bud sites.

Indoor cannabis seed varieties vs outdoor seed varieties: Indoor grows can often be somewhat space-limited but highly optimised. Outdoor plants in full sun can become massive bushes with hundreds of flowering sites even though the plants have to tolerate occasionally difficult weather.

Vegetative Time: Longer veg periods when growing feminised seed varieties (especially with training) can create more growth, blooms and therefore more bud sites.

Plant training: A plant that has been topped (i.e. with the growing tip cut off) or grown with the SCROG method will be bushier and may produce many more bud sites than a naturally grown plant without training techniques

Does topping increase bud numbers?

Yes — topping (removing the growing tip with scissors) and other training methods break apical dominance and encourage multiple side blooms instead of one dominant main cola, significantly increasing total bud sites.

Is one large cola better than several small buds?

It depends on your goals. One huge cola looks impressive and is easy to trim, but multiple well-developed blooms from a trained plant often give a higher overall yield and better light penetration. However, not every grower has the time to train/SCROG their plants.

Should I remove lower popcorn buds?
