Demystifying pure sativa cannabis strains
What is a pure sativa strain? For some cannabis lovers the differences between indica and pure sativa strains seem to be overstated. After all, both indica and sativa strains can be easy to grow and get you very stoned.
For others, however, pure sativa cannabis strains simply represent the finest and most satisfying expression of the cannabis ‘high’. The energising, stimulating and creative effects can seem unmatched by any indica. We try to separate hype from reality and explain all you need to know about pure sativa weed.
What is a pure sativa cannabis strain?
What is the difference between 100% pure indica and sativa strains? The best pure sativa strains have very little (or no) noticeable indica influences in the cannabis genetics. This can be observable from a few different characteristics in the plant growth:
Pure sativa strains show leaves with thin individual fingers. By contrast, pure indica strains tend to have leaves with wide fingers.
Stretch and general growth structure:
Pure sativa seeds often show significant internodal stretching during bloom. This often gives rise to tall plants which can fill all available space. Pure indica cannabis seeds tend to show limited internodal stretching and short, stocky plant structure.
With a pure sativa, the buds often have an open/airy structure which allow buds to cope well with higher temperatures/humidity without the risk of mold or rot. This is an ideal adaptation to the hot, tropical jungle environments which typify sativa origins and evolution.
Pure indica strains tend to have harder, denser bud structures. Indica strains often evolved in cooler, hilly/mountainous regions where the buds encounter less tropical conditions.
Pure sativa strains may have long bloom times, longer than those of pure indica strains. Some high quality pure sativa strains may (but not always) take 11-12 weeks of bloom or even longer.
Conversely, some of the faster blooming cannabis strains may often (but not always) be indica or indica dominant. These can be ready to harvest in as little as 7-8 weeks of bloom.
Sativa psychoactive effects:
Many sativa lovers will claim that the effects of a pure sativa strain are somewhat different from those of an indica. Specifically, the sativa high is often claimed to be more cerebral with perhaps less physical effects compared to an indica.
The type of genetics in your cannabis seeds determines whether your plant will grow into a pure sativa, hybrid or indica strain. If your marijuana seed supplier has full control over their genetics and breeding you can feel confident that your seeds will grow in the same way as described. If you buy your cannabis seeds from an unproven supplier your results really can be an absolute lottery.
Remember, you don't buy that many cannabis seeds each year - make sure the seeds you buy are genuine and high quality. A long history of cannabis cup wins is often a sign that your cannabis seed supplier takes their work particularly seriously!

How many pure sativa weed strains are there?
There are less pure sativa strains out there than you might imagine. Many sativa strains contain some degree of indica heritage. This has happened as cannabis breeders continue to make new hybrids and crosses to cater for the strong demand for hybrid strains.
Hybrid strains can offer slightly shorter bloom times than many pure sativa strains, perhaps with less stretch. These can be easier to manage for some indoor growers. If you want to grow pure sativa strain seeds you will need to do some careful research and perhaps consider how you will grow them as well. Growing pure sativa strains with the SCROG method could allow your grow room to manage any potential stretch more effectively.

What does a pure sativa feel like?
What does a pure sativa feel like? For many sativa connoisseurs nothing quite compares to a sativa. The soaring high can seem uniquely freeing and liberating. Your concerns and worries seem to dissolve as the sativa effects take hold, gently massaging your stress and anxiety until they disappear. Many sativa fans feel that their creativity is expanded and amplified after using a powerful sativa. Artists and musicians often find sativa strains are better for creativity and euphoric highs.
The key to a good sativa is use of pure parent genetics combined with a professional breeding project to stabilise the results. A pure sativa strain often won’t have quite the same heavy physical effects as an indica. But that doesn’t detract in any way from the pleasure of the experience. Many recreational and medical cannabis users actually prefer the effects of a sativa, or a sativa dominant-hybrid over the effects of an indica.
Remember one of the great benefits of growing your own cannabis is that you get to select the perfect genetics for you as well as the chance to grow, harvest and cure using optimised conditions. Growing your own cannabis seeds is also the most cost-effective way to guarantee a high quality supply of top-shelf buds.

How to grow pure sativa cannabis strains?
Do your research carefully and read up about the strain characteristics when planning your next pure sativa grow. A super-stretchy classic sativa strain such as Desfrán is probably the best pure sativa in the Dutch Passion collection. Note that you may not get the same fast bloom times and compact plants that you are used to getting when growing indica cannabis seeds. You will need to consider the type of grow, be it SCROG, SOG or a natural grow.

Cannabis strains in general all produce superior results when grown in optimised conditions. Quality LED grow lights are particularly recommended to any grower hoping to get the most from their sativa seeds. These will help you maximise both the cannabinoid content in your buds as well as the terpene profile, which creates the delicious taste and aroma.
Common questions about pure sativa strains
How long does a pure sativa high last?
It will depend on your personal tolerance (whether you are a daily heavy user or an occasional light user). The length of a pure sativa high will also depend on the strain and how it was grown.
If you are growing high THC sativa cannabis seeds in good conditions you can expect THC levels of around 20% and a high which will last several hours. Some people avoid using sativas late in the evening since the stimulating effects can keep you awake longer than planned!
How much CBD in pure sativa?
It depends on the cannabis genetics. A CBD rich sativa strain such as CBD Auto Compassion Lime can contain up to 13% CBD in the dried buds. Whereas other pure sativa strains such as Desfrán may have trace CBD quantities well below 0.5%. A good quality cannabis seed company should be able to offer you the choice of high or low CBD levels when you are buying cannabis seeds.
When to harvest sativa cannabis plants?
When to pick (harvest) a pure sativa? Often, but not always, a sativa will take a slightly longer period to complete bloom compared to an indica. Your own personal harvesting preferences will dictate whether you prefer your buds picked early, on time or late.
Early harvested sativa strains will have clearer trichomes than cloudy ones and a more energetic uplifting high. As the harvest date is delayed the trichomes start to transition from clear to cloudy, which is when many people harvest. But some will wait until the trichomes are starting to transition to amber or red colours, this will give a ‘heavier’ effect.

How to speed up a sativa flowering time?
Growers sometimes ask, for a pure sativa how to speed up flowering time? One option is to use a 10/14 bloom cycle (instead of a 12/12 cycle). This means 10 hours of light followed by 14 of darkness in each 24-hour period.
This not only helps the plant to ripen faster, but it can also reduce the chance of foxtails. Often a 10/14 flowering cycle is recommended for later stages of bloom, rather than from the start.
What does a pure sativa look like when harvest ready? Always look for the same characteristics which you would normally use to judge how ripe your buds are. Trichome appearance is always a good parameter to check, so is pistil (hair) colour as well as overall bud/plant/leaf look.
