When growing autoflower seeds outdoors in containers

• Large containers (30-50 litres / 7-10 gal) hold a larger reservoir of water and nutrition, meaning less maintenance (watering, adding grow/bloom supplements etc).
  
  
• Avoid black/dark containers which heat up in direct sunshine, risking over-temperature damage to the root ball.
  
  
• Experienced growers deliberately keep the grow container in the shade (e.g. using cardboard or similar), to avoid direct sunlight/heat issues.
  
  
• Small grow containers will need more frequent watering and nutrients than larger grow containers.
  
  
• Use of highly aerated grow containers such as air pots, felt sacks (or similar) allow greater levels of root oxygenation and are preferred over traditional containers.
  
  
• Growing in containers allow the grower to temporarily relocate their plants in the event of extreme weather e.g. heatwave conditions, storms etc.

When growing autoflower seeds directly in the ground

• It really does pay to supplement the natural ground with added minerals, compost and nutrients. Especially if the local soil is poor quality, sandy or low in nutrition. Typical soil improvers include seaweed, bat guano, blood fish & bone meal, dolomite earth (Calcium/Magnesium rich mineral) etc.
  
  
• Those growing in sandy, drought-prone conditions may wish to add some water absorbing crystals to the ground. These are similar to the material used in baby diapers to absorb many times their own weight in water. When mixed in with the local earth they greatly increase the water holding capacity of the ground.
  
  
• Good quality soil/compost can be bought from garden centres, this can be used to supplement/replace the local soil.

• In the event of extreme weather (acute heat or torrential wind/rain) an overhead shelter e.g. tarpaulin can offer valuable relief to your outdoor autoflower plants.
