Bermuda. Cannabis laws relaxed
Bermuda is to change its cannabis laws to allow “a diversion from prosecution” focus by the Ministry of Legal Affairs and the Ministry of National Security, according to Attorney-General Trevor Moniz. In simple terms this will mean that more people will be given informal warnings , especially first 'offenders'. The move comes as the neighbouring USA continues to see positive results from its own easing of cannabis prohibition.
Mr Moniz outlined the plan while reporting on the Ministry of Legal Affairs’ initiatives for 2015-2016, saying legal reform was a key priority.
“We will work with the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Bermuda Police Service to amend the formal caution policy to permit greater discretion on the part of officers when dealing with first-time offenders who might otherwise have been charged with simple possession of cannabis,” he said.
