Top 5 strains for a forest guerrilla grow

Although most people grow indoors or in a greenhouse/garden, many find that ‘guerrilla’ cannabis growing in the great outdoors is an easy way to become completely self-sufficient in their cannabis needs. The two most important aspects to a successful outdoor guerrilla grow are finding the best grow locations and buying proven outdoor cannabis seeds that are tough (and fast) enough to deliver the goods.
Forest guerrilla cannabis growing from seeds
Guerrilla growing means the cultivation of cannabis in the great outdoors. Often this includes sunny clearings in forests, riverbanks, suitable countryside locations, waste urban land etc. For those unable to grow at home, guerrilla growing is an established option which can yield hundreds of grams of dry buds from the largest plants.
Only a small fraction of the commercially available cannabis seeds (from any seed bank) are optimised and selectively bred for outdoor cultivation. Some longer-blooming strains may not have time to fully ripen before cold, stormy end-of-season weather arrives. That’s why it pays to research your feminised seed (and autoflower seed) options carefully.

Each of the cannabis strains listed below have been hand-picked by Dutch Passion staff to give the best results when grown in the great outdoors. You can also find numerous independent online grow reviews by outdoor growers.
If you would like to read some expert tips on finding the best outdoor grow spots, improving the soil and maximising your chances this guide to growing cannabis outdoors in the UK may help. The UK often has cool, grey summers and thousands of growers routinely harvest their annual cannabis needs from a few outdoor plants. If UK guerrilla growers can do it, so can you.
Frisian Dew: Tough as old boots. The undisputed outdoor champ
Always at, or near, the top of the outdoor cannabis seed best-sellers list is the uber-reliable, multiple cannabis cup winning Frisian Dew. Available only in hybrid feminised seeds, she is perhaps the easiest strain to recommend to outdoor growers. Ready for harvest around early October in the northern hemisphere (early April in the southern hemisphere) she delivers thick, chunky blooms and XL harvests even in borderline climates as far north as the UK/southern Scandinavia.
In good guerrilla grow locations with all-day (or near all-day) sunshine and nutritious moist soil plants can reach 3-4m (9-12ft) tall and yield well over a Kg (2lbs++) of dry buds, often with gorgeous pink/purple hues. THC levels are high with a fresh, fruity and floral aroma/taste.

Think Fast: ‘Fast’ photoperiod genetics and top choice for potency
Think Fast is a photoperiod feminised cannabis strain with recessive autoflowering genetics. These allow Think Fast to crash through her growth cycle and reach harvest a few weeks before ‘pure’ feminised strains. This means she spends more of her bloom cycle in the hotter, sunnier weeks producing perhaps the most potent outdoor buds from any of the strains in this article.
The additional speed means that harvests may not be quite up to the XXL levels of those seen from the other strains mentioned. But the quality more than makes up for any potential yield compromises with THC levels around 20% possible - on the same quality levels as good indoor grown strains.
Think Fast is especially recommended to those with shorter grow seasons. Northern hemisphere growers are able to harvest during September (March in the southern hemisphere). Buds are typically green with fresh sweet notes of citrus, diesel, herbs, pine and earthiness.

Durban Poison: Seasoned all-round, proven outdoor strain
Durban Poison in a mainly-sativa South African strain with high THC levels and a powerful long-lasting euphoric high. She is mostly grown indoors where she is a proven classic known for being one of the parent varieties in the creation of the legendary Girl Scout Cookies line.
Outdoor growers will be pleased to know that Durban Poison has proven herself over several decades with many generations of demanding outdoor growers. She has a spicy, hazy taste with hints of aniseed, liquorice, lemon and cloves.
Outdoors she is happy to grow maintenance-free in the seclusion of your guerrilla grow location. Final plant heights of up to 3m are not unusual, the corresponding yields can be outrageous - especially for buds of such notorious quality.
Passion #1: High potency original Californian Indica
Passion #1 is one of Dutch Passion’s earliest classics, an exceptional Californian outdoor Indica gratefully received by Dutch Passion in 1980. Cultivated outdoors in The Netherlands since the 1980’s (indoor growing was little understood in those days) she produces long solid green blooms known for their high-end potency. The citrus scent is fresh, tart and slightly spicy.
Most repeat growers value the hard-slapping sticky green buds as the main reason to keep growing her. Plants can reach 3m tall in full sun and good soil.
A perfect choice for any grower seeking a reliable indica known for consistently strong harvests with great yields. Usually ready for harvest around late September in the north hemisphere, late March in the southern hemisphere.
Purple #1: Durable outdoor producer with eye-candy colours
Purple #1 is a hybrid purple Afghani which was selectively crossed and completely acclimatised for outdoor growing in The Netherlands. Most of the plants are purple, with some green exceptions. Occasionally you can find individuals with a striking, vivid dark appearance.
If you want to grow powerful outdoor buds with exceptional appearance, then Purple #1 feminised seeds are a perfect choice. The blooms can be 50cm (1-2ft) long with a slightly tart, earthy, fruity and spicy aroma. Notably easy to grow even in zero-maintenance conditions.

Grow the finest outdoor cannabis genetics
Serious guerrilla growers often work hard to find locations that are unlikely to be disturbed by dog walkers, farmers etc. Ideally, they are near a water source in the event of drought. Google earth, as well as boots-on-the-ground, are the best combo to find discreet outdoor grow plots.
The perimeter can be secured by planting brambles/nettles. Some will use natural physical barriers such as fallen trees, rivers or existing thick undergrowth to find a secure location and then work hard to ensure there has no obvious trail to their grow or an easy way in.
Soil can/should be improved and dug over to improve aeration to get the best results. There is no point working hard to find/improve the best guerrilla grow locations if you roll-the-dice on unproven strains with no outdoor heritage. Any of the established, stable outdoor strains mentioned above will deliver great results for guerrilla growers.
One other Dutch Passion feminised seed variety which should get a mention is Hollands Hope, she is a fine-quality fully proven outdoor strain with thousands of repeat growers. She is available in feminised seeds as well as regular cannabis seeds for old-school growers or those looking to make their own outdoor crosses.
Remember if you prefer shorter outdoor plants you can top cannabis plants to produce shorter, bushier growth. Alternatively cannabis low stress training (LST) or cannabis high stress training (HST) techniques can be employed to tame vertical growth.
Are autoflower seeds suitable for guerrilla grows?
Yes indeed! The fast outdoor life cycle, typically around (or just over) 3 months means that even growers with the shortest of outdoor grow seasons can confidently complete a cannabis guerrilla grow. Potency from the best outdoor autoflower seed varieties is on a par with the best feminised strains.
With many autoflower seed varieties growing to around a metre tall they are also ideal to hide and won’t be as easy to see as some of the 3m+ feminised monster strains. Strains such as:
• Auto Duck have a stabilised leaf deformity and don’t even look like cannabis, ideal for those seeking extra stealth.
• Auto Mazar is a particular favourite of guerrilla growers, her tough Afghani Kush genetics lend themselves ideally to the demands of guerrilla life.
• Auto Forbidden Cherry is another tough, potent autoflower that is particularly suited to guerrilla growers needs.
• Auto Euforia is an incredibly reliable, popular and potent auto skunk. Outdoor growers love the resilience and fat sticky, skunky blooms. Notably strong buds!
What about cannabis high altitude mountain growing?
Some guerrilla growers really get off the beaten track and grow their plants in remote high-altitude locations. Dutch Passion have two specialist high altitude cannabis seed varieties, Snow Bud and Pamir Gold. Both of these were selectively bred over many generations at altitude in the Swiss Alps to produce strains ideally adapted to thin mountain air and cool conditions. If you’re growing at altitude, these are the ideal strains.
Remember, successful guerrilla growers are able to provide their entire annual cannabis needs often from just a handful of well-grown plants. With the right grow locations and the best outdoor cannabis seeds you too can be a successful guerrilla grower.
