Top 5 cannabis strains to grow by the seaside

If you live near the coast, you may face some unusual cultivations challenges when growing cannabis. The maximum summer temperatures you experience may well be a few degrees cooler than nearby locations a few miles further inland. However, your minimum temperatures on the coast may not get quite as cold as those further inland.
The effect of the sea is to act as a giant temperature regulator, dampening down temperature maxima and ensuring temperature minima don't plummet too low. For the discerning coastal cannabis grower this may mean quite a few months of great weather for growing both autoflowering cannabis seeds as well as photoperiod feminised seeds.
Best cannabis seeds to grow in coastal areas
The mild coastal conditions means that many seaside cannabis growers find autoflowering cannabis seeds to be a great option. The low height and bushy nature mean they are easier to protect from any prevailing wind than a 3-4m photoperiod feminised strain.
The fast outdoor life cycle and mild coastal conditions mean that (depending on your latitude) you may be able to get 2 or even 3 successive outdoor autoflower crops each year. Of course, photoperiod feminised cannabis seeds can also be grown by the seaside.
Favoured varieties are those with tough, proven outdoor performance as well as a fast-flowering period. Indica cannabis strains, or indica-dominant hybrids may stay a little lower than stretchy sativa strains - that could be useful for coastal growers that experience strong winds. The milder your climate the easier coastal cannabis growing becomes and the wider the choice of cannabis seeds available to use. Here are Dutch Passion’s top 5 cannabis seeds to grow by the seaside.

Auto Mazar, tough sturdy and compact indica autoflower seed
Auto Mazar has been at the top of the autoflower seeds best sellers, or very close to it, ever since she was released. Durban Dew, tough photoperiod feminised cannabis seeds
Durban Dew combines the best features of the outdoor cannabis cup winning champs Frisian Dew and Durban Poison. This is a photoperiod feminised cannabis strain and is part of the proven and highly recommended Dutch Outdoor cannabis seed collection. In the northern hemisphere she is ready to harvest around early October (Early April in southern hemisphere).
These hybrid genetics are tough and easy to grow. As with all photoperiod feminised cannabis seeds, a small amount of indoor pre-growth before being gradually acclimatised to outdoor life will help produce the heaviest final plants. Dependent on conditions, the plants can reach 1.5-3m outdoors. Good general advice for outdoor cannabis growers is to offer your plants some protection from the prevailing wind, such as an earth bank.
Also good general outdoor advice is to prepare your plot well before hand, enriching the earth (if necessary) with supermarket soil, slow release organic nutrients (e.g. BioTabs), well rotted manure, general fertiliser etc.
You can expect plants that will be a couple of metres tall in good conditions with yields of several hundred grams per plant in optimised coastal conditions.

Auto Skywalker Haze plants tend to reach around 75-125cm tall outdoors in good conditions. That makes them easy to hide behind garden shrubs or wild brambles/nettles. These high THC autoflower seeds have the well-known Dutch Passion ease of growth too.
You won't need to do anything other than ensure the plants have sufficient access to good quality soil and adequate water during warm, sunny weather. Yields are well above average and the quality of the buds will compare favourably with good quality indoor-grown weed.

Cannabis cultivation near oceans or seas
If you grow cannabis by the seaside/coast you will face some unusual grow challenges. On one side you may find you have a lot of stormy, humid, and windy weather to deal with. On the other side you may notice a reduced tendency for frosty, icy weather. You may also notice less temperature extremes. The well-prepared seaside cannabis grower can use these often-temperate conditions to their advantage when growing cannabis outdoors.
The reduced tendency for temperature extremes may mean that the coldest temperatures and early autumn/fall frosts which could occur inland may not affect seaside growers quite as severely. That’s because the ocean remains a few degrees warmer than the land during cold weather in many parts of the world, creating a mild microclimate along the coast. In mid-summer during the hottest days the coast will often be noticeably cooler, especially with a sea-breeze. This can give the seaside cannabis grower slightly easier conditions to work with.
Is salt water good for cannabis?
One disadvantage of coastal cannabis cultivation is the damaging effects of salt-water spray close to the shore. During high winds salt spray can be carried for hundreds of metres inland. Salt water contains high levels of Sodium Chloride.
In low levels these minerals occur naturally in soil and cause no harm. But repeated exposure to saltwater spray from the sea can damage cannabis. The delicate cannabis biochemistry needs a carefully balanced recipe of minerals and nutrients to allow the plant to thrive. Exposing the plants to seriously high levels of Sodium Chloride will cause rapid deterioration of health and eventually death.
