What is the difference between CBD oil and cannabis oil?

CBD oil is now available on the high street in many health food shops and is not psychoactive, meaning that it will not get you high. Cannabis oil is psychoactive and is made by solvent extraction from cannabis buds and leaves. You can buy CBD oil online and on the high street, even in countries where cannabis is illegal. CBD is also found in pharmaceutically approved medicines such as Sativex from GW Pharmaceuticals. CBD is short for cannabidiol which is a non psychoactive component of cannabis and is currently attracting a great deal of scientific interest for possible medical applications.

THC rich cannabis and THC rich cannabis oil gets you high.

The mainstream popularity of CBD oil is aided by the fact that it doesn’t get you high. Cannabis oil, on the other hand, can get you high if it contains sufficient quantities of THC, also known as tetrahydrocannabinol. Most (though not all) cannabis varieties tend to be THC rich. Some recent cannabis varieties such as CBD Charlotte’s Angel (15% CBD, ~0.7% THC or less) have so little THC that you don’t get high from the buds or the extracts made from them.

What are cannabis terpenes?

Cannabis, cannabis oil and CBD oil should contain terpenes. These are non psychoactive organic compounds with aromatic properties which bring the distinct cannabis smell. The most common terpenes include Pinene (responsible for a Pine scent), Limonene (citrus scent) Myrcene, Humulene and Linalool. These aromatic terpenes can also be found in other plants, not just cannabis.

How to make cannabis oil.

Cannabis oil is also known as hash oil and can be made by solvent extraction of the cannabis plant. One of the modern methods to make cannabis oil is to use compressed cooled Carbon Dioxide (CO2) to extract the resin from cannabis buds. Under extreme pressure and cold, CO2 exists as a liquid and is an excellent natural way to extract the oil. Once the pressure is released from the extraction vessel the CO2 safely evaporates leaving pure cannabis oil. If you use a THC rich variety such as White Widow you can expect an oil with a THC content of around 60-70%. In addition you can expect a range of other cannabinoids which may include CBD (cannabidiol), cannabigerol (CBG), CBC (cannabichromene), THCV, CBDV and many other cannabinoids. It is still largely unknown how one cannabinoid can amplify or suppress the effect of another. Likewise, little is known about how cannabinoids affect feelings such as appetite, anxiety relief, pain relief, happiness and general ‘well being’. There are also a variety of terpenes and natural oils natural flavonoids (flavor creating compounds) present in the extracts of both cannabis and hemp. Many cannabis home growers make their own cannabis oil from their harvest. Simply grow your cannabis at home using feminized cannabis seeds or feminized autoflower seeds, dry your crop, and extract the cannabis oil from it.

How to make CBD oil.

CBD oil can be made by extracting the resin/cannabinoids from hemp flowers with solvents such as ethanol, IPA, Butane, Dimethyl ether or CO2. Most CBD oil is made from hemp, the dried hemp flowers are used to make CBD oil in the same way that THC rich cannabis buds are used to make cannabis oil. CBD oil is regarded as free from significant quantities of THC and for that reason is more widely available than cannabis oil.

Making CBD oil from THC-free cannabis varieties.

You can also make CBD oil from low-THC cannabis varieties such as CBD Charlotte’s Angel (feminized photoperiod variety) or CBD Auto Charlotte’s Angel (feminized autoflowering CBD rich variety). These are cannabis varieties that have been selectively bred to be low in THC.

CBD oil vs cannabis oil.

Cannabis oil contains THC, it can get you high if you eat it, put some in a joint or dab it. You can buy THC rich cannabis oil in places where cannabis has been legalized, for example in the legal states of the USA. But in places where cannabis is illegal, cannabis oil is also illegal because it contains the psycho active ingredient THC.

Dutch Passion CBD Oil.

Dutch Passion CBD oil contains 5% CBD (Cannabidiol) in cannabis seed oil. The Dutch Passion CBD oil is called CBD Compassion Extract and is offered as a dietary supplement. The Dutch Passion CBD oil is produced using advanced solvent-free CO2 extraction. It contains natural CBD together with the full range of terpenes and other cannabinoids such as CBC and CBG. The Dutch Passion CBD Compassion Extract will not make you high because it’s a CBD oil without the psychoactive ingredients.

John, June 21st 2018. CBD can be purchased in most places, including health food stores. Cannabis oil can only be legally purchased in areas that have legalized cannabis
