Catalan Region. Govt plans to legalize medical marijuana
Catalan Government officials are drafting plans for the legalization and control of medical cannabis. It’s a decision which has been taken partly to control the growth of cannabis social clubs and partly to formally rectify the law allowing cannabis to be used medically.
Cannabis social clubs have boomed, with hundreds in, and around, Barcelona. This has caused concern among some conservative thinkers fearing that there are already too many cannabis clubs, with too little control over them. Others disagree, explaining that the cannabis social clubs have replaced a seedy black market with an effective system of regulation, creating thousands of official jobs in the process.
The use of cannabis for medical reasons is fully accepted by Catalan people, many of them have used it for generations as a natural and free remedy that can be grown easily in the local villages. The new laws will formally recognise the use of cannabis and perhaps they will introduce a medical marijuana system similar to the American system. Final details are still awaited, but this is progressive thinking by the Catalan region who are once again ahead of many other European nations.
