Canada: Doctors snub Government anti-pot adverts
As medical marijuana becomes mainstream doctors are increasingly intolerant of attempts to politicise the issue. In Canada three of the nations top Professional Doctors associations have very publicly stated that they will NOT participate in a taxpayer-funded advertising campaign against marijuana, saying the ads had become a clear “political football” in the debate over legal status of the drug. This is a real snub for Health Canada’s and hopefully will stimulate some more honest proposals in future.
In a rare joint statement the Canadian Medical Association, the College of Family Physicians of Canada and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada said they would decline Health Canada’s invitation to endorse a campaign on the dangers of marijuana use by young people.
Just a few years ago this kind of political snub would be unheard of. Today we see more and more medical professionals who are keen to replace prohibition with evidence based research.
