Australia: Legalization of medical cannabis 'imminent'

Australia: Legalization of medical cannabis 'imminent'

After several years of political debate and arguing, Australia is now very close to agreeing the legalisation of medical cannabis.
A bill has been introduced to parliament on Wednesday 10th Feb 2016 by the Liberal Party to amend the Narcotic Drugs Act 1967. The bill allows for the cultivation and use of cannabis for medical purposes and appears guaranteed to become law in March 2016, after the main opposition party immediately pledged support for it.

The draft proposal his for a national licensing and permit scheme to be established for the supply of medical cannabis to people with painful and chronic conditions.

“This government understands that there are some Australians suffering from severe conditions for which cannabis may have applications and we want to enable access to the most effective medical treatments available,” health minister Sussan Ley told parliament.

This is yet more remarkable progress for cannabis legality, and Australia’s new compassionate approach to medical cannabis is in stark contrast to some Asian countries which routinely execute people for drug offences.
