Argentina. Law makers approve use of medical cannabis

Argentina’s politicians just gave their final legislative approval to a bill legalizing cannabis for medicinal use and permitting the federal government to grow marijuana for research and therapeutic purposes.  That research will include investigations into the use of cannabis for various illnesses including a research program into cannabis oil and its many applications.

The measure will become law once it is signed by President Mauricio Macri.  The proposal originally came from the Cambiums party who sponsored the bill through the various stages of the political process.

"Thirty percent of epileptics do not respond to traditional medicine,” said Medical Doctor Ana María García Nicora, who heads the Medical Cannabis Argentina group.  Cannabis oil is one of the main new options to treat epileptics who have not responded to traditional medicine.  But many other medical conditions will be able to benefit from the availability of medical cannabis.

Campaigners in Argentina are celebrating the news but point out more work still needs to be done, however its a vital first step towards full medical legalisation.
